Water is pumped to one or more central places within the field and dispersed by overhead high-pressure sprinklers or guns, whether via sprinkler or overhead irrigation. These systems use a lateral pipeline with sprinklers spaced at regular intervals, and at each pipe junction, either a quick-coupling or non-quick-coupling connection is used.

The sprinkler is installed on a pipe riser, which allows it to function above the crop (in orchards, the riser may be short so that these types of sprinklers operate under the tree canopy). The sprinkler lateral is placed in one location and let to run until the desired volume of water is applied. After that, the lateral line is removed and moved to the next irrigation site. The initial cost of this type of sprinkler system is modest, but it takes a lot of labour. Most crops can be used, however some, such as maize, have difficult laterals to shift as the crop grows.

Traveling sprinklers are unmanned wheeled systems that can water regions such as small farms, sports fields, parks, pastures, and cemeteries.
